Google recently announced and started abolishing third party cookies on 04.01.2024 signifying a massive change in monitoring users’ surfing behavior. More specifically, third party cookies, in contrast to first party cookies which have a functional role (i.e., essential cookies), are set to monitor the users’ online behavior, profiling them and consequently obtaining information used for marketing and advertising purposes.

Critics of the use of third party cookies point out the considerable volume of personal data, the oftentimes sensitive nature of it and the actual lack of anonymity as the reasons to be considered against the use of third party cookies and thus, extensive profiling.

The complete abolishment of third-party cookies by Google will be set by the second half of 2024 and it remains to be seen under which circumstances user profiling will take place after that. We at DP-Dock  can offer you helpful insight on how to implement a compliant cookie banner and draft a respective cookie policy, while at the same time monitoring the correct use of cookies on your website.
